ashes,ashes - day 44 (project 365)

Today at work Armando walked in to ask about some services we provide and I noticed that he had been to church today evident due to the ashes on his forehead.  The first day of Lent .

We chatted about it briefly and family religious tradition and humorous exchange on keeping the peace at home if showing up without the evidence of being to church today.   I asked if I could take a photo of him and he was kind enough to oblige.

I never really understood the representation of the actual ashes, although I knew that it always marked the first day of Lent ,fasting and abstinence (Jesus spent 40 days in the desert fasting while resisting temptation from negative forces).   The link is in regards to the ashes.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a reminder and celebration of human mortality, and as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered from the burning of the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday.[5]
